How do I get a tax file number (TFN)?

If you do not have a tax file number (TFN), you can apply for one on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website. Once you have completed the online application form, you must then book an interview with a participating Australia Post Outlet to complete your application. For further information please refer to the ATO website or the Australia Post website.

After you have applied for your tax file number (TFN):

You must submit an eCAF by the due date and attach the following 2 documents:

  • Your Certificate of Application for tax file number (TFN) from the ATO.
  • The Australia Post Receipt confirming submission of your application.
Both documents need to be verified so please ensure all details on both documents are visible.
When you receive your TFN you have 21 days to provide it to Curtin. This is done by lodging a new eCAF, ensuring you enter your TFN in the space provided (please do not submit your TFN as an attachment).

If you submit your new form:

  • before the due date, the new eCAF will replace your previously submitted forms.
  • after the due date, you must email the Student Fees team at to advise that you have submitted your TFN on your eCAF so your student record can be updated.
