Answer

How do I get a tax file number (TFN)?

If you do not have a tax file number (TFN), there are two ways you can obtain one, depending on your circumstances.

Option one:
Lodge an application for a TFN on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website. After you’ve completed the application, you must book an interview with a participating Australia Post outlet to complete your application. Further information can be found on the ATO website as well as the Australia Post website.

After you have applied for your TFN you must submit an eCAF before the due date and attach the following 2 documents below. Ensure all details on both documents are visible so they can be easily verified.
▪ Your Certificate of Application for a tax file number (TFN) from the ATO.
▪ The Australia Post receipt confirming submission of your application.

Option two:

Australian citizens with an Australian passport can apply for a TFN online using myGovID and receive their TFN immediately. Visit the Australian Taxation Office website for further details.

Once you’ve received your TFN you must submit it to Curtin within 21 days, by lodging a new eCAF. Ensure you enter your TFN in the space provided on the form (do not submit your TFN as an attachment). Your new eCAF will replace your previously submitted forms.

If you’ve submitted your TFN to Curtin after the due date, email the Fees team at feesassist@curtin.edu.au to advise that you have submitted your TFN via eCAF so your student record can be updated.
