What were the 2020 HELP loan limit changes?

On 1 January 2020, the Australian government introduced a combined cap on the amount you can borrow to cover the cost of your tuition fees. This is called the ‘combined HELP loan limit’ and will apply to you if you use a HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP and/or VET Student Loan.
As of 2022:
  • The combined HELP loan limit is $109,206 for most students or $156,847 if you’re studying medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.
  • The limit will be renewable, so if you reach the limit you can make repayments on your HELP debt and then access HELP until you reach the limit again.
You can find more information about these changes and how they may affect you on the Australian government’s StudyAssist website
